Five (scientific!) Reasons to Love the Sun

Needless to say, we are pretty partial to the sun here in South Florida. We try not to take for granted the veritable paradise we live in, where beach walks beckon and barbeque weather is year round.

To celebrate our sun-filled existence, we thought we’d share some of the scientific reasons to embrace the shine here in Boca Raton. Enjoy!

Be happier!

There’s a reason positive dispositions are often described as “sunny”! Light from the sun has been shown to trigger the release of serotonin and endorphins, essentially happy hormones that enhance calm and induce a general sense of wellbeing.

Get better sleep.

Remember those “happy hormones” we described in the first point above? Well, turns out those hormones also make the body more effective at producing melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. This puts your body in a great position for a balanced circadian rhythm, meaning you’ll sleep like a champ and wake up well rested – just in time to take in some more sun.

Healthy bones

Those who live in sunshine-starved locations often need to supplement with Vitamin D. This is because vitamin D helps to keep your bones healthy, which affects people both young and old. Getting outside helps keep those bones strong!

Lose weight?

This goes hand in hand with our vitamin D revelation – but studies have shown that there is a correlation between exposure to sun and the ability to shed that stubborn belly fat. One study found that when vitamin D levels were balanced before beginning a weight loss program were more likely to achieve their goals.

Lower your blood pressure

The feelings of relaxation caused by sunlight are not just mental, they are also physical. When you soak in the rays, nitric oxide is released into the blood vessels, which helps bring blood pressure levels down.

So there you have it – get outside and celebrate the sunshine armed with scientific reasons for doing so!
