Wellington 

Wellington is a village in Palm Beach County, Florida and is officially referred to as the ‘Village of Wellington’.  It is known as one of the most successfully crafted communities in Palm Beach County and has been named in Money Magazine’ as one of the ‘Top 100 Best Places to Live’ for its abundant parks, quality schools, attractive neighborhoods and equestrian activities. Known as ‘The Winter Equestrian Capital of the World’, Wellington is famous for horse-related and polo events attracting accomplished polo players and riders to both the International Polo Club Palm Beach, and the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.  Wellington’s mottos are “Unique Hometown, Family Atmosphere, Family Environment” and “A Great Hometown…Let Us Show You”.

Location

The Village of Wellington is located in the western-most part of The Palm Beaches, and shares a southwestern boundary with the Florida Everglades. It is served by Palm Beach International Airport, just thirty minutes away, or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, less than an hour away.  Comprised of just over 31 square miles of land, Wellington’s population is approximately 61,000 and is the most populous village in the state. The population is evenly spread with a median age of thirty seven years.


Activities and Events

As the epicenter of all things equine, Wellington is home to three distinctive events in the calendar: The Winter Equestrian Festival, The Palm Beach International Polo Season and the International Gay Polo Tournament.  Several other tournaments include the Global Dressage Festival , the USPA Piaget Gold Cup and the Nespresso U.S. Polo Open at the Palm Beach International Polo Club.

The International Polo Club also serves as a venue for many events and activities in Wellington including corporate events, charitable activities, lunches and more.

The Mall at Wellington Green and the Old Wellington Mall are popular shopping destinations featuring sought-after and popular fashion retailers. 

Wellington’s large renovated public library hosts seasonal events such as the annual Top Gun model aircraft show, the Barett-Jackson Auto auction, art and antique shows and holiday parades.

Created with a Palm Beach County grant, The Wellington Amphitheater can accommodate up to 1500 persons and regularly hosts events such as the popular free movie night, orchestral performances and touring musicals and plays.

Family-friendly activities include a visit to the Panther Ridge Conservation Center and a trip to Tiger Shark Cove Park where kids can enjoy the sunken pirate ship or giant octopus while parents relax in the pavilions. 

Outdoor Life

As well as a strong focus on equestrian activities, Wellington plays host to a number of golf courses and a large number of parks bearing in mind its small size.  Residents and visitors alike can make the most of the twenty-six parks such as Azure Park, Summerwood Circle Park, Wellington Green Park and their facilities such as 17 softball/baseball fields which include 14 batting cages, 3 playgrounds, 2 pavilion/picnic areas, skate facilities, 4 sand volleyball courts, 2 basketball courts and 2 shuffleboard courts.   

The Village Park Athletics Complex is an extensively equipped facility providing both indoor and outdoor facilities for every sporting activity imaginable.

The Wellington Environmental Preserve allows you to walk, jog or bike along its quiet, wide trails, and the Peaceful Waters Sanctuary is a terrific place to bird.

For beach activities, it’s approximately a thirty minute drive due east to the Palm Beaches.

History

Wellington was originally the world’s largest strawberry patch on land called the Flying Cow Ranch; Flyer because the founder, Charles Oliver Wellington, was an aviator and ‘COW’ stood for his initials.  Wellington began as a planned unit development and until 1990, it functioned as a sprawling bedroom community. Since it was incorporated in 1995, Wellington has become known as an international center for equestrian sports.

The village of Wellington’s community is designed to support family life, and families can enjoy a whole range of events, outdoor facilities and activities; especially when it comes to equestrian activities.  Wellington also has an excellent reputation when it comes to schools with eleven Palm Beach County A-rated schools within its boundary, and some offering specialty magnet programs.

Business Community

Wellington experiences a tremendous influx of some of the wealthiest people in the world for its equestrian events, and therefore tourism, retail and horse-related businesses play a major role in the economy of Wellington.  Real estate is big business and the area is a popular destination for the likes of Bill Gates, who has just completed the purchase of the entire Wellington Street totalling six properties and about 20 acres, and Laurene Powell Jobs who has also bought a large ranch in the area.
