Palm Beach

The island of Palm Beach is home to legendary resorts, stunning mansions, historic landmarks and some of the world’s wealthiest and famous people. Renowned for its beautiful weather, blue water and palm trees, Palm Beach is situated on a barrier island and separated from its neighbors by the Intercoastal Waterway. The island was originally established as a resort but developed into a city during the 20th century.

Location

Palm Beach is situated only minutes from Palm Beach International Airport and is 30-45 minutes from Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The town is also served by Amtrak and the Tri-Rail train to Miami. The town is about an hour north of Miami in a highly accessible, yet somewhat off the beaten path, location. The city of Palm Beach boasts an average low temperature of 67 degrees and an average high temperature of 83 degrees. This pleasant year-round climate is one of the major attractions for both tourists and residents.

Population of Palm Beach

The town’s year round population of over 11,000 swells to over 30,000 in the winter as visitors flood into the city to enjoy all it has to offer.   Over half of the city’s residents are retirees although Palm Beach is becoming increasingly popular with families and younger residents.

Activities & Events

Palm Beach has something for everyone; a playground for the rich and famous during the high season, and an abundance of activities and cultural events throughout the year for the more down-to-earth resident.  Palm Beach is perhaps best-known for Worth Avenue; a destination shopping district lined with stately palm trees that is packed with a myriad of high end boutiques and stores.  Golf is a major pastime for many residents and visitors, and because of Palm Beach’s location, golfers can choose from outstanding views of the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Worth Lagoon or the Intercoastal Waterway.  The area enjoys a number of year-round large-scale events such as the Palm Beach Food & Wine Fest (December) at various locations across the island, and ArtPalmBeach considered one of the most influential contemporary art fairs on Florida’s Gold Coast.  Palm Beach even hosts the World Series of Poker each year!

As you would expect, dining out in Palm Beach can range from the extravagant to the more casual and Zagat refers to Palm Beach as ‘swanky, old-school charm with a posh dining scene to match’.  Every taste bud is catered for; from affordable burgers to fresh seafood fests, and from American traditional dishes to international and Continental cuisine.

The city has a strong arts scene and there are galleries galore featuring something for everyone.  The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is located in Palm Beach as well as the Flagler Museum and the Armory Arts Center that provide days out for the culture-vultures in the family.

Outdoor Life

There is an endless supply of outdoor activities mostly aided by Palm Beach’s warm year-round climate. In addition to several golf courses, the city boasts three tennis centers, town dock and a recreational center.  The rec center offers an afterschool program as well as an outdoor basketball court and other sports offerings.  Palm Beach and the surrounding region is lined by 47 miles of beaches as well as over 125 miles of winding waterways, making the area a haven for adventure water sports, fishing, diving, and boating.

Historic Districts

The town has been synonymous with high society since 1896 when oil tycoon Henry Flagler built his first luxury hotel on the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1920s Addison Mizner created the city’s signature architecture by combining Tuscan, Moorish and Mediterranean styles to create Palm Beach as we know it today.  The residents and city administration recognize the importance of preserving Palm Beach’s history, and the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach is instrumental in keeping the area alive through walking tours of Palm Beach’s most significant historical architecture, and through an active library featuring historical documents and research materials.  The group also sponsors educational programs to support the work of preserving old Palm Beach.

Family Friendly

Palm Beach’s small-town, laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect choice for families. There are several top rated schools in the area, and families are drawn to Palm Beach for its highly regarded public and private schools as well as the outdoor lifestyle and wonderful year-round climate.

The Business Community

The city’s business community includes a blend of tourism businesses, service sector organizations and self-employed home workers.  The Palm Beach Business Group works hard to promote the growth and development of the city and area that includes identifying Palm Beach as a future major hub for the bioscience and a base for capital market activity. Fitch described the wider Palm Beach County as one of the nation’s wealthiest counties, with per capita personal income levels nearly 50% higher than state and national averages. The ratings firm recognized Palm Beach County’s vital and diversifying economic base as a result of strengths in luxury tourism, technology manufacturing, and agriculture.
